Australia’s Brisbane to Host Olympic Games for The Third Time in 2032

The Brisbane city of Australia will host the summer Olympics in 2032 as the International Olympic Committee on July 21 approved the executive board’s recommendation. Australia will be hosting Olympics for the third time. Brisbane, where a large number of people gathered to watch the IOC session, becomes the third city of Australia to get the chance after Sydney in 2000 and Melbourne in 1956. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said that it is a historic day for the entire country. The global cities can surely secure the Olympic Games, so it was a fitting recognition.

Queensland’s capital was on the preferred list for the host from February and earned the executive board’s nod in June. The selection of Brisbane means Australia becomes the second one after the United States to host Olympic Games in three different cities. Several countries and cities have expressed an interest in hosting the 2032 Games, including Hungary’s capital Budapest, Indonesia, Qatar’s capital Doha, China, and Germany’s Ruhr region. But as per the new process of IOC, Brisbane moved ahead of other countries in February and has been opted as the preferred host.

Huge Praise

The Olympics in Brisbane will be in the grateful, diligent, and enthusiastic hands, said John Coates, an IOC Vice President, and Australian Olympic Committee Chief. He also said that he is making a commitment to all the athletes across the globe that they will provide an unforgettable experience. The bid of the city had earned big praise from the IOC for the high percentage of existing venues, experience in organizing events, favorable weather, support from the government and private sector, and many more.

A commitment from the Australian government in April month to split the infrastructure costs with the local government boosted its chances more. The Queensland state hosted the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The IOC member Coates is the closest ally to IOC president Thomas Bach. Coates was unsuccessful in attempting to land the 1992 Games for the Australian city Brisbane, and it was awarded to Barcelona.

The IOC has overhauled its bidding rules in the year 2019 to decrease the costs and to make all the processes a bit easier for cities. There is no campaigning of cities ahead of the voting process like earlier. Instead, IOC selects a preferred host after discussing with all interested cities and then puts that particular city to a vote at the session. Tokyo is currently hosting the 2020 Olympics, and Paris will stage the Olympic Games in 2024.
